Getting Your Braces Off
Getting your braces off at Lakeway Orthodontics is an exciting milestone, revealing the straight smile you’ve been working toward. You might wonder what the process involves, whether it will hurt, and what comes next. Here’s everything you need to know about braces removal and how to keep your smile looking great!
What to Expect During Braces Removal
Getting your braces off is a straightforward and painless process that typically takes about an hour. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what will happen:
Removing the Brackets & Wires
Dr. Brian Bolerjack will use special tools to gently pop off the brackets and remove the wires. This process is quick and shouldn’t hurt, though you may feel slight pressure as the brackets come off.
Cleaning Off the Adhesive
Once the brackets are removed, there will still be some bonding material left on your teeth. Dr. Bolerjack will use a polishing tool to remove any leftover adhesive, leaving your teeth smooth and clean. You might feel slight vibrations, but it’s painless.
Taking Final Impressions (If Needed)
In some cases, Dr. Bolerjack may take impressions or digital scans of your teeth to create a custom retainer. This ensures your teeth stay in their new positions after the braces are gone.
Fitting Your Retainer
A retainer is essential to maintaining your results. If your retainer is ready the same day, Dr. Bolerjack will check the fit and give you instructions on how to wear it. If not, you’ll return for a fitting soon.
Enjoying Your New Smile!
Once everything is done, you’ll finally get to see your braces-free smile! Your teeth might feel a little strange at first, but you’ll quickly get used to their smoothness. Now it’s time to celebrate your beautiful new smile!

Caring for Your Smile After Braces
Now that your braces are off, it’s important to maintain your new smile with good oral care and proper retainer use. Here’s how to keep your teeth looking their best:
Wear Your Retainer as Directed
Your teeth can shift back if they aren’t properly maintained, so follow Dr. Bolerjack’s instructions on wearing your retainer. Whether full-time at first or just at night, consistency is key to keeping your results.
Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
Without braces, brushing and flossing are much easier! Brush at least twice daily, floss daily, and consider using a fluoride rinse to keep your teeth strong and cavity-free.
Schedule Regular Dental Checkups
Continue visiting your dentist every six months for cleanings and exams. Dr. Bolerjack may also schedule follow-up visits to monitor your retainer and ensure your teeth stay aligned.
Watch What You Eat
Although you no longer have braces to worry about, be mindful of foods that can stain or weaken your teeth, like coffee, soda, and sticky sweets. Eating a balanced diet will help maintain a bright, healthy smile.
By following these steps, you can enjoy the long-lasting benefits of your orthodontic treatment!
